Barry Francis Frederick Scott
October 19, 1937 - February 18, 2022
Tribute
It is with deep sadness that the family announces the passing of Barry Francis Frederick Scott. Born in Prince Rupert and bereaved of his mother at a very early age, Barry spent his formative years in the Dunbar area of Vancouver. After a year of travel in Europe following his high school graduation, he attended the University of British Columbia where he gained his teacher education and later a degree in Canadian history which was a lifelong interest. Barry met Jeanette while they were both on a short term teaching stint in Prince George. At the end of that school year, they bought a Triumph sports car and spent their somewhat delayed honeymoon driving to Mexico City. And so their travelling life began. Until his health began to fail, Barry’s love of travel continued and together, he and Jeanette visited over fifty countries…travelling by ship, plane, train and automobile …often with children and grandchildren. They moved to Powell River in 1971 where Barry taught for over twenty-five years. Barry was a devoted husband, father and grandfather but was also active in the community offering leadership in the NDP, the Powell River District Teachers’ Association and in Civil Liberties. He also put in many hours as a volunteer at St. David and St. Paul Anglican Church. After his retirement from teaching, and prior to a disabling injury, Barry enjoyed golfing and working out at the gym. Barry will be remembered as a gentleman with a fine sense of humour, one who easily engaged in conversation with anyone interested in hearing his stories or engaging in conversation about local or world affairs. Barry is survived by his wife of 56 years, Jeanette, daughter Sine (Brent Chernenkoff); son, Francis (Jennie Manilay); grandchildren, Sarah and Aidan Chernenkoff and Madison Manilay Scott; brother, David (Janette), sisters, Kathie Chapman, Joan Dodds and Christine Sallstrom (Scott); brother-in-law, Allan MacArthur and many nieces, nephews and cousins. The family wishes to thank Dr. Bahadori, the Home Support Staff and the 4th floor nursing staff at the Powell River General Hospital for the care that they offered to Barry. Funeral Services will be held at St. Barnabas Anglican Church in New Westminster on February 26 at 4:00 pm. Donations in Barry’s memory may be made to Powell River Hospital Foundation , the SPCA or a charity of your choice.
