Beverely Alice Hopkins
June 24, 1940 - December 26, 2010
Tribute
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our mom, grandma and great grandma Bev Hopkins on Sunday Dec 26th, 2010. Mom was born June 24th 1940 in Erkisdale Manitoba. After raising her family in Brandon Manitoba she moved to Powell
River in 1978. Mom was predeceased by her parents Rita & William Roman and her brother Edwin. She leaves to mourn her daughter Cathy Brydges (Jamie), son Jim (AKA Butch) and Brenda, granddaughter Stacy (Ryan), great grandson Damien and granddaughter Amanda. Mom also had a special international student staying with her whom we know as Kuba Mach. She will be sadly missed by her brothers Bill, Laverne, Doug and her sisters Vel and Mabel, nieces, nephews, other family members and great friends too numerous to mention, as well as her beloved pets Bud, Pita and Ralph. Mom was always involved in activities that had to do with her family. There was Brownies, Guides, Sea Cadets, music, camping, anything that had us spending time together. We have many fond memories of our families gatherings singing and playing piano or accordion. Mom was one of the first “Mail Ladies” in Canada 40 years ago. In 1978 she transferred to Powell River Post Office and retired in 2000. She always had a stash of dog treats in her mailbag for her special four legged friends along her routes. There were always extra people in our house all the time as Mom became a long time Foster Parent and opened her home to those who needed a roof over their heads and place to feel safe. In 1983 Mom learned how to swim and then in 1984 she got her Scuba Diving certificate. The next year we all were diving together exploring the underwater world. Mom enjoyed her dancing. She was part of the Sunshine Coast Cloggers and also squared danced with the Stardusters. Not surprising was that Mom started up the Alexander Belles to perform for the Legion and seniors in Powell River. A great time was had by all with plenty of skits and songs. There was also a band that she played in for the Old Timers. Later on Mom started taking in International Students. They came from India, Taiwan, Czech Republic, Quebec, Brazil, and China just to name a few. Mom became a licensed Ham Radio operator known as VE7FLC. The memorial for Bev will be held Thursday January 6th 2011 at the Westview Baptist Church at 2pm. Please come and celebrate her life with us. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the SPCA or the charity of your choice. Special thanks to all of her friends and family who came to visit at the hospital and phoned to see how she was doing. Carol & Jean, your help is appreciated and so comforting. John, thank you for taking care of the household and animals during Mom’s many hospital stays.

Bev was truely incredible. For more than 10 years Bev has played the role of Canada World Youth Grandmother, hosting participants from all over the world. In her home she has pictures of all the kids who have stayed with her. She called it her “United Nations”. Bev was a real gem, and although I knew her only briefly, I will never forget her.
Bev you will be dearly missed.

Bev was a kind and gentle soul who enriched the lives of the children she shared her home with. She was a special ‘grandma’ to those who needed her unconditional love.
Thank you Bev – You will be very much missed in the foster parent community. May you rest in peace, knowing you made a difference in the lives of many
