Tribute

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Tom following complicated illnesses. He is dearly missed by Anne, his wife of 49 years, daughter Jill (David), son Todd (Holly), his five grandchildren Nicolas, Liam, Colin, Noa and Jon Tomas. Tom is also survived by his brother Jim (Brenda), sisters Pat and Norah, nieces and nephews Jane, Adrian, Jeremy, John and Natalie.
Tom has met many wonderful and warm people (real people, he said) as he made his journey through life. As a journalist he covered the Press Gallery in Victoria for The Canadian Press; he worked and lived in Tokyo, an assignment that took him to many parts of Asia, including a favourite, Indonesia; to his retirement residence in Gillies Bay. Tom has always enjoyed writing; from his morning muses on Facebook, communicating with email friends, to stories of local interest. To the end he said that he was not finished with writing. Since moving to Gillies Bay five years ago, Tom took great pleasure in restoring his 1950 Jaguar Mark V drop head coupe. Tom will be remembered for his kindness, intelligence and humour by his many friends throughout the world. He drew on the strengths of these friendships during the last months of his life.
A celebration of Tom’s life will be held on December 12 at the Ravenous Raven, 2614 Gillies Bay Road, at 3 pm. All who knew him are welcome to attend. In lieu of flowers please make a donation to your local food bank or charity of your choice.
