David Harold Symons
December 14, 1944 - September 1, 2014
Tribute
SYMONS, David Harold born December 14 1944, died of cancer, September 1, 2014; predeceased by his mother Lillian, and father, Harold and beloved wife, Rose.
David was born near Kits Beach in Vancouver. On that shore, he came to love the sea.
Early in life he had profound curiosity about how machines worked and how things were made, especially cars and boats. In his teens he crafted a car from scratch. It was deemed uninsurable, it was so unique and irreplaceable.
From the time he was a little boy, he detested most foods except butter and chocolate. He was consistent in this to the end of his life but recently discovered a third food group, fresh prawns.
He moved to the Queen Charlotte Islands and there crafted a beautiful 36 foot Herreshoff ketch, a very popular boat at the Vancouver Wooden Boat Festival. He was a fearless sailor of the BC and Alaskan coasts, generally solitary except for his cat.
He settled on Denman Island waterfront with moorage in front of his house for his sailboat and lots of room to construct a steel building to house his tools and collection of old cars and car-related memorabilia.
After getting fed up with Islands Trust, he moved to Texada Island where he began restoration of a cedar-hulled fisheries boat. He loved everything about Texada, the sea, the forest, the lake, his friends and his cats.
He was a master craftsman who generously shared his amazing breadth of knowledge and skills with friends and family. David was polite and quietly funny. He had an extensive movie collection-his endless favourite, “Blazing Saddles”. He was never rushed and always thoughtful about how to work through the next problem or project. He had many of them on the go.
He is grievously missed.
In memory of him, please love and hug your pets.
