In Loving Memory of DAVID THOMPSON

AKA “Dave” and “Darter 99” spent the last eight years of his life on beautiful Texada Island surrounded by the wonders of nature and a community he enjoyed.  He succumbed to cancer and died peacefully in his home with people who love him at his side.

David was born and spent his youth in Los Angeles, California and then split his teen years between there and Columbus, Ohio.  In his early adult years he lived in both southern and northern California and a few years in Texas before moving to Edmonton, Alberta, in the mid 70's.  His skills as a master machinist served him well in all of these places, building, maintaining and selling pumps — for water in California and later in the Alberta oil patch.  He later spent some time on Vancouver Island before returning to Columbus to care for his father John, finally retiring to Texada Island in 2006.

He is survived by his sons Steven of Chico, CA; Rob of Arcata, CA; and Eric of Orlando, FL; and a brother, Phil, of Bellingham, Washington.

David also had other special people in his life; a friend of more than 40 years, Steve Honey, Tonja Cunningham who was like a daughter to David, and Joy Garnett, who came into his life a short eighteen months ago.

Joy will be ever grateful to David for introducing her to Texada Island.  She plans to make it her home now … not the home of David's and her dreams … but the home of her own dreams.  Joy wishes to thank everyone who extended their friendship and assistance to her through this difficult time.

Thank you to the professionals at the Texada Island Health Centre and the Home Support Workers for being there when David needed you.

As a member of the Texada Island Legion Branch 232, David is well-remembered for volunteering as the “burger burner”at the Wednesday night dinners and for his passion for darts.  For his love of nature, kayaking, fishing, gardening, playing and watching golf, his two cats, and coffee and keno at the hotel, he is also well-remembered.  He was proud to be an active member of this community that he loved so much.
