Elizabeth Marie Carlson

January 21, 1933 - April 3, 2021

Tribute

On Saturday, April 3, 2021, Elizabeth Marie Carlson (née Wightman) passed away at the age of 88.

Beth was born on January 21, 1933, in Powell River, BC, to Bill and Marie Wightman (née Kammer). Beth was a bright student who became a teacher after graduating from Brooks High School. She taught in Port Hardy, Whitehorse, Grand Prairie, and Kamloops before returning to teach at Assumption and then Kelly Creek schools in Powell River.

Beth met John on a blind date and they were married February 27, 1965. Beth then stayed home to raise her three children and foster daughter. She actively volunteered at Edgehill elementary school and especially enjoyed sewing costumes for the schools’ annual operetta. After her children grew up, Beth volunteered at the Powell River Museum and the Hospital Auxiliary. Until dementia made it impossible, she was an avid letter writer and a devoted family genealogist.

Family was the most important thing to Beth. As an only child she thought of her cousins as brothers and sisters, regardless of how far away they lived. Her greatest pleasure was spending time with her grandchildren. They’ll always remember listening to her tell stories as she baked them sticky cinnamon buns.

Beth and John loved to garden and together they transformed their 2.5 acre property so it looked like a park. Over the years the Carlsons’ garden was the location for many wedding and graduation photos.

Beth was a kind woman, a dedicated teacher, a devoted spouse, a nurturing mother, a loving grandmother, and a loyal friend. She will be remembered for her kindness and her love.

Beth was preceded in death by her husband John and her son Kerry. She is survived by her son Keith (and Teresa), her daughter Stormy (and Jason), and her grandchildren William, Benjamin, Annika, Andrew, and Naomi.

A deep thank you to those friends and family who helped care for her, and especially to the kind and gentle staff at Willingdon Creek.

A small outdoor reception to memorialize Beth’s life will be held once the weather becomes warmer and covid restrictions permit. In lieu of flowers donations can be sent to the Willingdon Creek Village.
