Geraldine (Gerri) May Parsons

October 12, 1925 - November 21, 2020

Tribute

On November 21, 2020, our precious Gerri Parsons was reunited with her beloved husband, Charlie. She was 95 years old.

Their story began in 1943. It was love at first sight. A chance meeting with a young Canadian soldier, on Day Leave from Station Hamilton to Buffalo, New York, gave Gerri her first look into “the bluest eyes ever seen.” After communicating by letter for 4 years during World War II, Charlie sent Gerri a one-way ticket to Powell River. And, thus began their adventure — a lasting marriage, an unshakable love and an enduring partnership.

Charlie and Gerri were seldom seen apart and were fondly known as “The Velcro Couple.”  They raised five children, jointly operated businesses in excavating and sawmilling, travelled the world, and served and supported their community.

Special thanks to the Home Support Staff, who lovingly cared for Mom, to Dr. Du Toit, and to the community members who loved and supported her along the way.

Granny and Poppa leave to carry on their legacy, five children: Danny, Benita, Ivan, Krista, and Marty, along with their spouses, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren, and all the many other young and old who were touched by their love and zest for life.  They will be thought of daily and loved forever.

Our family welcomes your comments, memories and stories. They can be posted on Martina Maréa’s facebook group page, “You know you grew up in Powell River if”

Both Gerri and Charlie received the Queens Golden Jubilee Medal marking the 50th Anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II ascension to the Throne and appreciation from the mayor and council at a formal ceremony at Edgehill Elementary School recognizing outstanding and exemplary contributions to their community. A personal privilege to have known these remarkable citizens.

I’d been wondering about Gerri lately , if she was still around . Well , it looks like she had a good kick at the can ! Hard to keep a tough person like that down . I’ve got her “Sawdust” book , read it twice , might do it again in memory . My condolences .

Our deepest condolences go out to all the Parsons families. Lots of great memories of Gerri. She was kind, lots of fun, great cook and a little ball of fire. Very fond memories of Gerri during Trailrider days many years ago. Gerri was a legend! You were all very lucky to have her. With our sympathy. Elaine DelGiudice(Vanichuk) and family

Our condolences to the Parson family. It was our privilege to know both Gerri and Charlie. A special memory is Charlie and Gerri helping with a school Loggers’ Day. The intermediate elementary students loved it when the couple fired up their noisy portable sawmill. All day long groups of kids had an opportunity to cut small logs into lumber. The Parsons were generous with their time and help for others.

Sorry to hear of your Mom’s passing…I know she is a wonderful place now with your Dad…many many memories of time spent with al of you in our growing up years…going out in the putt putt swimming at midnight in total darkness…spooky but fun…wishing you all great memories to remember and cherish….she was little, But she was mighty!

From: Dennis and Gail Glasscock
Relation: Friends of Benita Worley (daughter of the deceased).

We are friends of Benita and Dan Worley and we only learned of Gerri’s passing yesterday. We enjoyed meeting Gerri a number of years ago. She even gave us a copy of her book. It was quickly evident that Gerri was quite a character. We have also heard many interesting and varied stories about Gerri and Charlie over the years. I just read Martina’s Facebook posting on You Know You Grew up in Powell River if…. The comments show that they were a loved and cherished couple. We send our condolences from West Kelowna.
