Jack Vlug

January 13, 1942 - December 23, 2020

Jack was born in Holland and emigrated with his family to Powell River in 1952.  He worked at the mill for almost his whole career.

He and Maureen attended Salvation Army training college for two years and then were posted to Thompson, Manitoba, for two years as Salvation Army pastors. Jack was a longtime attendee at the Salvation Army and ran the sound board for Sunday services for years.

He leaves to mourn him his wife, Myrna Carty, sons, Gerry (Michele), Gary (Betty), daughter Deanna (Mike), son Paul (Tina), fifteen grandchildren, sisters, Ida, Corrie, Mary and Margaret, and one brother Henk and many nieces and nephews.  Also left to miss him are his three stepsons, Kent, Dean and Jordon and their families.  He was predeceased by his parents Gerritt and Margaret, son Jeff and sister Willie.

Jack loved Scottish Country Dancing and taught at local schools as well as his Monday night dancing group.  He was also lead drummer for the Clansman Pipe Band in recent years and belonged for many years to the quilting guild.  Along with wonderful memories, his beautiful quilts are part of his legacy.

A memorial service will be held when COVID 19 restrictions permit.

Relation: Scottish Country Dancing

As Dance Coordinator for the Vancouver Branch of the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society, I and the many dancers who knew Jack, trained as a teacher with Jack and joined him on the dance floor, were truly saddened to hear of his passing. He contributed countless hours to sharing his love of this dance form with people of all ages. He will be sorely missed. Rest in peace Jack.
