Jessie Marjory Berrow
September 18, 1925 - August 27, 2026
Tribute
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved family matriarch, Jessie (Sue) Berrow (née McMorran), on August 27, 2026, at the age of 100 years young, at Willingdon Creek Village.
Jessie was a woman shaped by the experiences of her life and by the deep compassion she carried for others. Her genuine kindness had a way of making people feel welcomed, valued, and cared for. Those who knew her will also remember her quick wit, wonderful sense of humour, and the laughter she so easily shared. Above all, Jessie had an unwavering love for her family, who were at the very heart of her life.
Jessie was predeceased by her beloved daughters, Starr and Annette, as well as all but one of her siblings. She is survived by her son, Gary; her sister, Dale; and her grandchildren, Tammy, Lori, Richard, Karen, Mary, Vicki, Sueann, and Jane. She also leaves behind several generations of great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren, each of whom was deeply cherished and will carry her memory with them.
Jessie was born on September 18, 1925, in Empress, Alberta, to John and Hendrica McMorran. The third of six children, her early years were shaped by life on the family farm, where hard work and responsibility were simply part of everyday life. When she wasn’t walking several miles to school each day, Jessie could be found helping tend to the animals and crops or caring for her younger siblings. Whenever there was time for a little fun, she loved finding the nearest hootenanny and showing off her dance moves—particularly the Highland fling.
As a young woman, Jessie joined the Canadian Women’s Army Corps (C.W.A.C.) and proudly served overseas during the Second World War. Following the war, she married Herbert “Ted” Berrow, and together they eventually made their home in Powell River, B.C., where they raised their three children, Starr, Annette, and Gary. Alongside raising her family, Jessie began a long career with B.C. Ferries, working on the Saltery Bay route for more than 25 years before retiring.
Outside of work, Jessie found happiness in life’s simple pleasures. She loved working on puzzles, writing poetry, spending time with her cats, and baking cookies and sweet treats—especially her famous fudge, which became a favourite among those lucky enough to enjoy it. She also took great pride in her garden, which was always beautifully tended and reflected the same care, patience, and love that Jessie brought to so many parts of her life.
Our family would like to extend our sincerest gratitude to Dr. Yahaya and all the staff at Willingdon Creek Village for the kindness, care, and attention they provided Jessie throughout the final two years of her life.
At Jessie’s request, there will be no funeral service. A private family gathering will take place at a later date.
