John Leonard Grantham

November 30, 1927 - March 23, 2020

It is with great sadness that the family of John (Jack) Leonard Grantham announces his passing on Monday, March 23, 2020, at the age of 92 years. Jack was predeceased by Joyce, his wife of 61 years, his brother Dick and his sister Diana. Jack is survived by children Rick, Bob (Elayne), Bill (Mar), Doug (Shannon) daughter Kathy and his sister Eve. Jack will also be fondly remembered by his nine grandchildren, three great-granddaughters and his nieces and nephews.

Born in Vancouver, Jack graduated from Lord Byng Secondary School before earning a Bachelor’s Degree in Chemical Engineering and a Masters of Education from the University of British Columbia. A permanent move to Powell River in the early 1950’s brought employment at the Power River Company’s pulp and paper mill and 30 years teaching high school math and chemistry at Brooks and Max Cameron before retiring in 1987. An intelligent and caring man, Jack was admired for his many exceptional qualities. A lifetime of memories: playing bridge with friends, fishing off the hulks and picnicking on Harwood island, taking his children water skiing on Haslam Lake, making blackberry wine, building projects around the house, tending his garden and relaxing on the deck waiting for the ‘green flash’ of the beautiful Powell River sunsets.

The family would like to thank the doctors and the 4th floor nurses and staff for the care they provided.

A service will be held at a future date.

Sorry to hear of his passing. he was a great teacher ,and I was very impressed that he always remembered my name. The way he carried no on after the passing of his wife, has encouraged me since my husbands passing!

From: Bonnie Johanson
Relation: Teacher

John Grantham was a wonderful man. He will be missed by many .He remembered me from high school chemistry. He always had a kind word whenever I saw him. I admired him as a teacher. When I got older I admired his devotion to his wife and his kind heart. He loved his kids and they often came up in discussion when he would stop to chat. Condolences to his family.

Relation: Ex Max Cameron Senior Secondary Algebra 11 teacher from September 1986 to June 1987.

Brooks Junior high school from 1964 to 1980, my awareness is Mr Grantham and math/ science teacher Mr. Ron Basi, were colleagues along with Mr. Kuczma, Mr. Hansen, secreatary Mavis, administrator Mr. Fred Doupe and many others within Brooks school and S.D. #47.
Mr. Basi sadly passed on November 13, 2016 in Newton private nursing home, but he told me some names of teacher colleagues therefore I am saddened by the loss of Mr. Grantham because of his innate intelligence. Mr. Grantham was my grade 11 regular, Algebra teacher from Sept 1986 to June 1987 at Max Cameron Senior Secondary located in Westview, Powell River. Mr Grantham provided me with a C + final grade and I was not academic paper smart in any Math or Science classes from grade 8 to 12. I salute Mr. Grantham.
