John Michael Zaikow

January 8, 1949 - March 21, 2026

Tribute

Our family is heartbroken by the sudden loss of John, a dedicated and loving husband, father and grandfather.  He was born in the Powell River General Hospital on January 8th, 1949, to parents Mike and Maria Zaikow. He and his sister Sonia had an adventurous childhood in Van Anda on Texada Island. He gained a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Regina, and was a lifelong learner, always willing to expand his knowledge through reading, courses and workshops.  He became a licensed realtor in 1979 to join his dad, Mike, in the family business on Texada. For 47 years he enjoyed helping people find their homes, and was known for his authenticity and integrity.

John married his high school sweetheart, Betty, in 1972, the same year they bought their Texada homestead.  They farmed, lived lightly on the land, raised their children and hosted events from simple barbeques to family weddings. John was happiest at his homestead, surrounded by nature and his beloved family.  He was grateful to call Texada Island and the qathet region home, and appreciated exploring the mountains, beaches and forests in every season.

John was committed to building community, as a Boy Scout leader and founding member of TAN. He spent many years as a board member of the Texada Parks Board, United Way, Sierra Club, Sunshine Music Festival and many other organizations.

He will be forever missed by his wife, Betty, son Jake (Angela), daughter Amanda (Dillon) and cherished grandchildren Sage, Amy, Reed, Nile and Lorenzo.  He is also lovingly remembered by his sister, Sonia (Chuck), brother-in-law Bill (Jeidre) and many close nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

We are so grateful to have had this intelligent, kind, witty, compassionate man in our lives. In honour of John, donations can be made to a community organization of your choice.

From: Knut Kraft
Relation: I am his Norwegian cousin

I am deeply saddened by the sudden and unexpected passing of my dear cousin and friend John.
John held a special connection to his Norwegian roots as his grandfather Carl emigrated to Canada in 1912. This heritage meant a great deal to him, and it was something we shared and cherished together. I live in Norway and I have had the great privilege of visiting John and his family in Powell River yearly since 2012. Over time, these visits grew into something truly special, and I became very close not only to John but to his entire family.
John was a man who left a lasting impression on everyone he met — warm, friendly, and always ready with a great sense of humor. I will remember John for his generosity, his laughter, his strength, and the deep love he had for his family.
John will be deeply missed, always remembered, and forever loved.
Knut
