Tribute

We mourn the passing of our mother, grandmother and great-grandmother Karna Andrea Marie Jagd Nielsen on Saturday, February 18, 2012. Mom was predeceased by our dad Kaj Olaf Christian Nielsen in 1997.
Mom was born in the region of Copenhagen, Denmark, in 1918 and immigrated to Canada in 1950 with Kaj and the children. Mom and dad lived in Delta until 1974 when they retired to the Black Point area of Powell River.
Although trained as a milliner in Copenhagen, mom worked in the fields and fish cannery in the 1950s to help support the family. In 1966 she was able to return to millinery, opening her own custom boutique Hats by Karna on South Granville and later at Oakridge Shopping Centre in Vancouver.
Mom was also known for her elaborate and delicious smorgasbords enjoyed by family and friends on special occasions.
The family would like to thank the caring staff at Evergreen Extended Care Unit, especially mom’s favourite nurses Georgie and Christine. We are also grateful for the special care and concern from her companion Kim who could always get a smile from mom.
Left to remember her are her son Jess of Powell River, daughter Annie (Bob) Westfall of Coquitlam, son Kim of Whitehorse, grandchildren Teri and Lorie Nielsen, and Leisl and Kristen Westfall and great-grandchildren Cameron, Sean, Aaron and Zoe. A family funeral will be held at a later date.
