Tribute

Kay was born in Winnipeg, MB March 25, 1930 and passed away in Powell River, BC December 18, 2021

When reminiscing with Kay, she would always go back to when her father got employment in Rossland, BC moved his family there.  Her father died in 1947 after dismantling a building and that forced her mom to find work at a Smelter Plant.

At the ae of 18, Kay left home for Victoria, BC to get her Teacher’s Training and a Degree in Special Education.  One of her adventures and treasured memories was her trip to Ethiopia to teach there, which was truly an experience of her lifetime and if you ever visited Kay you would see items of her excursion displayed throughout her apartment.  Another adventure was travelling the Coast in a boat with the people know as “Shantymen” (people that lived on the Coast would remember this name well).  They would teach Vacation Bible School throughout the summer months at various stops up and down the Coast.

From 1970 – 1987 she taught in Powell River where she retired.

After retirement in 1987 Kay started collecting cans and bottles for Missions Work and to this day we have no idea how much was donated to the various Missions.  She didn’t want to do this service to make herself look important or great in any way, but only to help the needy.  At first she kept a record, but this was soon put aside as her goal was to do it for the right reason not looking for recognition.

Kay lived at Mowat Bay for 10 years and during this time she had a heart attack and went through surgery, but continued to live alone with her cherished companion “Barney” her favorite mongrel dog.  Once Barney died she sold her home and moved into the Kiwanis Village and was always so thankful for the everlasting friendships that were made throughout the years there.  In December 2017 she moved to the Kiwanis Manor and again being thankful and always giving thanks to the Lord for his Provisions for her and watching over her and giving her comfortable places to live in.  She was indeed Blessed over the years.

Kay leaves behind three nieces who live in Victoria, BC – Joan Jolson, Gayle Chapman and Ann Crozier Smith (by the way she looked at your pictures each day as they were on the door to her room) and a brother Ted and his daughters in Oakville, ON.  Kay thoroughly enjoyed her visit with her brother just prior to COVID – she was thankful for his timing in coming to see her.

Kay was a devoted Member of Evangel Pentecostal Church and didn’t miss a Sunday or any other service other than for sickness.  Kay enjoyed people and loved everyone, she considered everyone her family.

Thank you to House Three at Willingdon Creek.  This was her home and she was thankful for her lovely room and the people she got to know.  To the Nurses, Care-Aids, Kitchen Staff and Cleaners – Thank You!  You always acknowledge Kay and that made her day.

Thank you Bob and Maude for your visits, she enjoyed them and was thankful that you stopped by.

We will remember Kay for the twinkle in her eye and the smile that would light up any room.
