Margaret Dunn

January 6, 1924 - March 8, 2021

Tribute

It is with broken hearts the family of Margaret Dunn announces her peaceful passing in the early hours of March 8, 2021 at the age of 97 years. Margaret was surrounded by the love of her family; she passed as she lived, with courage, dignity and grace. Margaret was born in Manchester, Lancashire, England, the first of two daughters to James Joseph Andrews and Mildred Andrews. Margaret was a true English beauty, a woman with an interesting life growing up in England. In her younger years, the Andrews family was a special part of Margaret’s life, visiting them often. Margaret rode her bicycle to work in Gatley as a cashier. She enjoyed long walks with her friends in Wythenshawe Park, dancing and catching all the recent movies at the local movie theatre. Her fondness of the cinema led her to a lifelong fascination with pop culture, movies and movie stars, an interest Margaret enjoyed all her life. Quick recall of movie stars, scenes, quotes and titles led her to being the go-to source for all movie star facts, and the ability to win any movie trivia questions with ease. Margaret, living her life full of courage and commitment, was influenced in 1946 at the young age of 22 to join the ATS (Auxiliary Territorial Service ) serving her country during the Second World War. After the war ended she married her sweetheart, Donald. In 1949 their first daughter, Deirdre was born. In 1951 Donald, Margaret and Deirdre immigrated to Canada travelling on the ship, Mauretania. Donald was fortunate with his skills to obtain employment as a millwright in the Powell River mill. Margaret worked in the Powell River Stores. They were blessed with two more children, a son Stephen and a daughter Dana. This completed their family and they lovingly raised their three children in the house they built together in Westview. During this time, staying home to care for the children, Margaret enjoyed knitting, reading and gardening. Margaret and Donald enjoyed travelling, returning to England on several occasions to visit family and on getaways to Reno, Las Vegas, California and their favourite vacation spot, Hawaii. Whan Donald passed away, Margaret continued to travel England with her sister Mildred and to Europe, England, Australia and Hawaii with other family members. Many happy family gatherings took place at “Mom’s house.” She treasured her family and embraced every moment with them. She gave an incredible amount of unconditional love to her family, she was a good listener and had a quiet, gentle demeanor. Her thoughtfulness was never-ending, she never missed sending a symbolic remembrance, be it sending a greeting for birthdays, anniversaries, Easter or Christmastime, or her love and hugs to her loved ones. Margaret, along with her cherished sister Mildred, spent many years enjoying going for a walk to the library, and to the mall shopping, quite often ending with dinner at their favourite Chinese restaurant. Margaret maintained the family home until 2017, when health issues necessitated a move to Evergreen Extended Care. Family visiting in Evergreen was still top priority and several birthday parties were enjoyed, as well as the music entertainment and barbecues on the patio. Margaret and Mildred enjoyed many chats on the phone, catching up with daily life. Margaret was a kind-hearted and compassionate soul who handled all that life sent her way with unbelievable strength and grace. A gentle lady has left this world and she will be deeply missed by her family and friends. We are comforted to know that Mom will be reunited with her beloved husband “Don” and her father “our Jim” and her mother Mildred. Margaret was predeceased by her father James Joseph Andrews in 1945, her mother, Mildred Andrews in 1983, her beloved husband Donald Dunn in 1984 and son-in-law Stan Fuller in 2015. Margaret is survived and will be forever remembered by her children Deirdre, Stephen (Cheryl) and Dayna. She will be lovingly remembered by her grandchildren Carl (Heather), Lana (Neil), Cory, Brooke (and family), and Tamara and great-granddaughter Jenna. Margaret was proud of all of her family; she held her family close and cherished them all. Margaret is also survived by her loving sister Mildred, whom she shared a special bond with for 95 years, and her niece Susan, nephews Mark (Sandy) and Craig and their families, in addition to numerous relatives in Great Britain. Thanks to all the family members who phoned and visited; this brightened her days. Margaret also appreciated her hairdresser and friend Tina Bevans for all the years of hairdos, friendship and visits; Carol Engram and Laurie Stieben, who cheered Mom up with their friendship, thoughtful visits, moccas and sweet treats; librarian Joanne Tobie, who kept Mom supplied with audio books, which Mom spent many hours listening to; and Tina Simpson, who visited and brought Mom music CDs. The family would like to express its sincere thanks and appreciation to Dr. Brigette Dohm for her many years of kind and dedicated care of our mother and to all the staff at Evergreen Care for their compassion and patience toward Margaret or “Meg” as they liked to call her for the past three years.  In lieu of sending flowers, the family asks that when you see carnations, please think of Margaret, as carnations were her favourite flower. Our mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, auntie and friend was a remarkable woman; her beautiful spirit and smile will never be forgotten.

~ Forever in our hearts ~
