Mary Ruth Taylor
December 14, 1920 - November 15, 2018
Tribute
Reverend (Mary) Ruth Taylor December 14, 1920 – November 15, 2018 Reverend Ruth Taylor passed into the care of her God peacefully, without fear, without pain, wrapped in the comfort of love and care generously provided by her earthly angels, Patti Catcher and Donna Richards, the staff at Evergreen Extended Care in Powell River, and a host of friends and family who cared for her from afar. Ruth was predeceased by sons Robbie and Mike, her husband Herb and two daugthers-in-law, Grace and Judy. She leaves her eldest son Victor, three grandchildren Rob, Jennifer, and Robin, and six great-grandchildren to carry on their lives with the memories of her remarkable life. She had three older brothers, which influenced the development of her character from an early age. She was driven to demonstrate that women could challenge the status quo and succeed in a world dominated by men in positions of authority. Her legacy will be that she succeeded in doing so and encouraged and counselled many women to do likewise. Ruth completed Normal School in Toronto and taught in a one-room school in southern Ontario. She was matron of the Indian residential school in Moose Factory, organist and choir director in several Anglican parishes that my father was assigned to, was the editor of the Moosonee Diocese “The Northland” magazine, the editor of the national Anglican Women’s magazine, taught creative writing in Moose Jaw, at age 60 was ordained as one of the first female priests in the Anglican church, co-authored two booklets with her husband, and wrote her own story, with the assistance of Donna Richards, “There’s Always More,” at age 95. A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held in Powell River at noon on Saturday, December 8, at St. David and St. Paul Anglican Church. Ruth will be interred next to her two sons and husband in Moose Jaw next spring.
