May Sing

Date of Death: April 4, 2021

Tribute

With deep sadness, we announce that May Sing passed away peacefully on April 4, 2021 at the age of 101. She lived in Powell River for over 75 years, and together with her husband Paul operated Penny Profit Foods for 30 years.

May will be greatly missed by her children Karen, Gord and Laurie, grandchildren David, Andrea and Cheryl, great-grandson Remi, sisters Lona and Marline (Mona), and many nieces and nephews including Linda and Jack of Powell River. She was predeceased by husband Paul, parents Mr. and Mrs. C.D. Hoy, and siblings Evelyn, Ann, Rose, Yvonne, Star, Lily, Jack, Ben and Irene.

While raising her family with Paul, May rarely sat down. A working mom, she compensated for lost social time by making friends with loyal customers at the store. She enjoyed simple pleasures like family gatherings, swimming, picnics at the beach and looking after her yard – in fact, in her 90s she still pruned her own fruit trees. An inventive cook, she could whip up delicious meals from whatever was at hand. She took time to make favourite meals and bake treats for loved ones whenever she could. But what she liked more than anything was to help others; after retiring, she visited residents at the Olive Devaud and Evergreen Care Unit nearly every day, year after year. People often described May as “tireless, feisty, funny, selfless and sweet.” She was all of these and so much more to those who loved her.

Grateful thanks to Linda, Jack, Theresa, Dennis, Anne, Alex, Ruth, Ernalee, Eliza and Tim for their extraordinary love and care. Thanks also to the community of friends, family, neighbours and ECU/PR hospital staff who supported May in so many important ways.

No formal service by request. In lieu of flowers, an act of kindness for those in need in your community would be a thoughtful way to honour May’s life.

Dear Laurie and members of the sing family….sending you all warm condolensces in the passing of your mom. We enjoyed seeing her out for her walks along the back alley and she would often help herself to dad’s parsley outside the fence. She was a very quiet neighbour, but a hard worker at Penny Profit store. Im glad she made the 101 milestone. May she rest in peace, she certainly deserves it.

From: Stewart Alsgard
Relation: Retired Naval Officer

Penny Profit supplied Naval training vessels, late 1960 -early 1970’s, when operating in the local area, with their needs. May made sure that great care was taken to ensure quality, completion and accuracy. A remarkable person and member of a much respected family. A personal privilege to know and respect them to this day.
