Michael Bruce Golech
January 28, 1948 - July 6, 2022
Tribute
Michael Bruce Golech, 74 years young, born in Transcona, Manitoba, passed away unexpectedly in Richmond, British Columbia on July 6th, 2022. Predeceased by his mother Marie (2020) and father Michael (1991), he is survived by his beloved daughter Ramona, son-in-law Kyle, grand-dogs Bo and Coda, and many dear friends and family. He was a soft-spoken man of kindness and principle, of brilliance and endless talents, and a lifelong learner and mentor to many; he always had a fascinating story to tell (e.g. “the crows”). He retired just last year from his 48 year career as an aircraft electronics technician where he traveled all over Canada and the world. He loved his career, but first and foremost he was a devoted and selfless single father. He will be buried in a private ceremony for family in Powell River, BC.
Gone far too soon, he will be loved and missed eternally.
He’s out on the trail with Buddy and Buffy watching the birds and climbing the trees.

From: Andy Rice
Relation: Volunteered with him
Volunteering alongside Mike at the Kathaumixw choral festival in Powell River was one of the highlights of my formative years throughout the 2000s and 2010s. I feel so lucky to have gotten to know him in this way – working alongside him, learning new skills from him, and hearing about the things he loved the most in life: his daughter, his wolf-dog/dog-wolf, his avionics career…
Even though he’d long since relocated to the Lower Mainland, Mike would return to Powell River every two years to help turn the local hockey arena into a concert hall. His ingenuity, quiet humour and gentle spirit added so much to the ad-hoc collective of loveable misfits who comprised our facilities crew. I’m not sure how many years he’d been coming back to help by the time I arrived on the scene, but it was many – and pretty much like clockwork. I can think of dozens of ways to spend one’s vacation days, but this was how Mike chose to spend his – doing a different kind of “work”, and giving back to a cause he believed in supporting. Truly a class act.
Mike would always arrive unannounced. And, as I learned after a couple Kathaumixws, Mike never really said goodbye either. (I don’t think he liked that kind of fuss.) Rather, he’d just sort of quietly disappear towards the end of the packup. After he sold his place in Cranberry, I knew there’d probably be one year where Mike might not come back, and that day came in 2016, but I always hoped that I’d be able to track him down somewhere down the line. As it was, I did run into him once at the YVR South Terminal a handful of years ago and it was so great to catch up, hitch a ride in the Audi and shake his hand one more time. But I think it’s still going to be a lot of years before a little part of me stops waiting (and hoping) for Mike to make one of his quiet, understated entrances back into my life.
My heartfelt condolences to Ramona and his family. Your dad was a wonderful guy.
