With broken hearts the Meyer and Phalen families announce the passing of Randy Lloyd Phalen (November 18th, 1959 – August 5th, 2026). As a proud third generation Powell River local, salt water and a passion for the backcountry ran in his blood. Randy is pre-deceased by his first wife Debbie and father-in-law Ken. He is survived by his children Connor and Natasha; wife Kim; mother-in-law Kit; and many loving aunts, uncles, family, and friends. He also leaves behind his dog, Maggie, who still hasn’t quite learned all the boat rules.

Randy built a successful career and lifelong friendships as a commercial fisherman on BC’s coastal waters. As part of an elite few who can park boats in the Lund Harbour without losing their minds, triggering new insurance claims, or filing for divorce, Randy could out park (and out fish) most of the west coast. He leaves behind a legacy of quiet generosity and kindness for all those in his path – and freezers full of salmon and prawns.

There are not too many people in this world who can pull off knee-high gumboots and Hawaiian shorts, but Randy tried really hard to be one of them. His outfits looked best cruising through Desolation Sound with Kim on their boat Just Livin’ Life, on trips to Winter Harbour and the Celebration of Lights, and while making questionable life choices on scaffolding at his cabin up Powell Lake. Most (normal) people face a cancer diagnosis by slowing down, but Randy saw it as the perfect opportunity to build a giant landing craft for hunting trips. That boat will now carry Randy’s friends through many hunting seasons to come.

We would like to thank the doctors, nurses and staff at the Powell River General Hospital for their dedication and compassion throughout Randy’s cancer battle.

To Randy’s closest friends who made sure Randy was out fishing in his final weeks, kept him well stocked with wild game, and who stood by his side through everything – you made impossible circumstances lighter. Thank you.

A celebration of life will be held in the Fall.
