Tribute

Bob Brock (Robert RossStevenson Brock) Bob Brock was born in Regina, Saskatchewan, on January 5, 1937. He passed away at home on October 18, 2018. He was a son, brother, husband, dad, uncle, grandpa and friend. Bob touched many hearts on his journey. To celebrate Bob, Ma (Jacquie) says stop by for a visit, reminisce, and tell Bob stories. Bob had many adventures throughout his life. He was about a year old when they moved to Vancouver, then over to Palmer Bay, then Nanoose Bay on Vancouver Island, Craycroft Island, Minstrel Island for grades one and two, Saint Anne’s Boarding School in Duncan with his brother Locky for grades three and four (his memories from boarding school: how tough the nun’s were on the kids). For grade five they lived in Hope, then onto Shalath for grades six and seven. Bob had some great stories from this time in his life. Hiking down to Seton Portage and going swimming in Anderson Lake, then catching the train home for a nickel, going to bible camp for boys at Gun Lake. Bob and his brother Locky hired an indigenous fellow and his horse to haul a massive watermelon his mom Jessie had grown to the bible camp for them. Then onto Squamish for grades eight to 10, where he met his lifelong love Jacqueline Long and many lifelong friends. When Bob was 16 and 17 he lived in Regina/Winnipeg and did farm work, then found himself homeless and sleeping at the train station in Winnipeg when it was at least 30 below outside. A recruiter for the army came around and told him if he joined up he would get three squares a day and a warm bed. Bob joined the army, spent a year in Gagetown, New Brunswick, then went off to Germany for two years. Bob enjoyed his stint in the army; he joined basketball and soccer teams, went exploring in Amsterdam and Copenhagen, and spent his 20th birthday in a pub in England. After the army he went back to Squamish, married Jacquie (had two fabulous kids: Dalcy and Jeff), had many different jobs: a blaster’s helper on the Daisy Lake Dam, logging, booming, a sporting goods store and coached football; he was a handy fellow all around. The family moved to a logging camp on Guildford Island (1970 to 1973). During this time he attended Malaspina College and became a heavy-duty mechanic. The family then moved to Thunder Bay in Powell River. Bob was working in a logging camp up Phillips Arm. Jacquie figured this was B.S. She wanted Bob home so they purchased Bowes Hardware in 1976; the store morphed over time into beds and bedding, housewares, appliances and furniture. Bob’s two grandchildren Coda and Wyatt used to sit on his lap and he would read the Princess Auto catalogue to them, taught them to play cards and how to pour a pint of beer, many hours of joy between all involved. Bob had some physical challenges the last dozen years or so; he had an amazing attitude throughout. He went out to his shop every day, tinkering, engineering, and planning his garden, shopping through the seed catalogues, and consulting the girls on what seeds they wanted started in the green house. Rest in peace, Bob.
