Tribute

Shauna Marie Bruce (nee Bonthoux) passed away Saturday, January 18th, with her family by her side, after a sudden and brief battle with cancer.

Shauna was born on July 10th, 1962 in Edmonton, AB. She spent the majority of her life in Prince Albert, SK where she raised her two daughters, Tara and Melissa, and met her partner Darrel. Shauna adored the last 13 of her life in Powell River, BC.

Shauna is known for her love of water which she enjoyed sharing. She spent many years swimming, fishing, lifeguarding, teaching swimming lessons, and aquacise. She also dedicated many hours to coaching her daughters’ swim clubs and soccer teams. Her work ethic and dedication translated to her careers, including at the City of Prince Albert 911 Operations Center and Powell River City Transfer.

Shauna was outgoing and had a contagious laugh. She loved to garden, cook with cocktails, spend Saturday mornings drinking coffee & Baileys while snuggling her cat Ernie, and was a lifelong fan of The Young & The Restless. Her and Darrel enjoyed many an evening watching hummingbirds and playing “name that tune” while Darrel strummed his guitar on the deck. Her greatest pride was her daughters and grandchildren, as evidenced by all of the photos plastered throughout her home. She had a good life, she was happy, and she’ll be dearly missed.

Shauna is survived by her spouse, Darrel McKone; her daughters, Tara Bruce (Jim Lessard) and Melissa Bruce (Steve McCall); her grandsons, Vance and Logan Lessard; her siblings, Judy (Ron) Bonneau, Wendy Reed, Randy Bonthoux (Connie McPhail), Ron (Arinder) Ens, and Ken (Lois) Bonthoux; her stepfather, Ed Ens, as well as many nieces, nephews, and good friends.

She was preceded in death by her father, George Bonthoux; her mother, Leona Ens, and her grandson, Linden Lessard.

As per Shauna’s request, there will be no service at this time. Celebration of life may come at a later date. Her family would like to express a heartfelt thanks to the doctors, nurses and staff at the Quathet General Hospital for their kindness and care. An additional thanks to the overwhelming support from the people she worked with, her community and friends near and far.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Shauna’s memory may be sent to the Canadian Cancer Society and/or the Powell River SPCA.
