Thomas Lloyd Venables

July 7, 1917 - November 23, 2017

Thomas Lloyd Venables July 7, 1917 – November 23, 2017 Powell River lost a longstanding member of the community very early on November 23. We sadly announce the sudden passing of Thomas Lloyd Venables. He was known as “Dad” by many who were fortunate enough to know him. Lloyd had just celebrated his 100th birthday this past July with family and friends. He grew up in Boissevain, Manitoba, on a family farm that was self-sustaining for the family and helped them through the depression.Lloyd was called to serve in the army in World War II. He was involved in all the major campaigns in Europe and Africa. After the war ended, he departed for the West to see a brother in Vancouver. While there, he contacted his colonel from the war, who lived in Powell River. Upon finding him, Lloyd gained employment at the mill in 1948, where he worked for 34 years.Lloyd worked hard all his life and provided a wonderful home and property for his family. Many people, for many years, enjoyed the bounty of his labour from his huge garden. The coffeepot was always on for anyone wanting to bend an ear and partake in some freshly baked homemade goodies. They usually were given some to take home with them.Lloyd dedicated 30 years of his time, labour and goods assisting the Salvation Army. He provided community service by faithfully picking up bread donations from the local supermarkets and delivering them around town. He and his wife always helped with the Christmas hampers and donated many crafts to the bazaars.Lloyd was predeceased by his wife Jean, who passed way in 2002. He is survived by his daughter Shelley, son Steven, grandchildren Curtis and Brittany, great-grandchildren Ryder and Brixton, sister Bea Venables, nephews Bruce, David and Buck, niece Jean and their families.Lloyd was a quiet man of honour who never failed to do the right thing and was always full of good cheer, grace, patience and kindness; he was never one to complain. He will be sadly missed and most fondly remembered by all who knew him.The family would like to thank the fourth floor nursing staff at Powell River General Hospital and Stubberfield Funeral Home for their expert advice. No service by request.
