Vincent Henry Chapman
May 18, 1918 - January 4, 2021
Tribute
Vincent chose his last road out, said “get on with it” and waved goodbye. He was predeceased by his wife Anora (Mary) in 2014. He is survived by his children Catherine, Dianne (Bill) and Douglas (Agness), four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Vincent was born near Winnipeg and raised in Souris, Manitoba. He left home early during the 1930s and worked at a number of farms in Northern Ontario. After the war broke out, he enlisted with the Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders of Canada. He trained as a commando in England and participated in the disastrous Dieppe raid. After being taken prisoner, Vincent spent almost three years as a prisoner of war and survived Hitler’s death march. At war’s end, he returned to Canada, married Mary (Anora) and started a family in Manitoba. In 1948, the little family relocated to Vancouver and then in 1949 to Powell River, which always felt like home. Vincent worked as a mechanic for Harry Davies and as an electrician in the mill and for Rodger’s Electric, retiring in 1978 from the post office as head letter carrier. Vince served as a volunteer fireman and also with the Victim Witness Unit. His competitive nature was satisfied with curling, lawn bowling and lane bowling. He also enjoyed fishing out on the chuck and ham radio. The family would like to thank Dr. Schweitzer and the staff on the fourth floor for their warmth and kindness to Dad in his final days. There will be no service by request. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the charity of your choice. He was a man of his word and did not suffer fools gladly.
