William (Bill) James King Harper
October 28, 1941 - January 20, 2021
Tribute
With the heaviest of hearts we announce the peaceful passing of Bill Harper. Bill was born in Newmarket, Ontario to Alfred and Jessie Harper. Bill grew up on the family farm in Brampton, Ontario. Cerebral Palsy did not slow Bill down. He was an active man who enjoyed farming, singing, and being of service to others. His joy for life was felt by all who were blessed to be his family and friends.
Bill was a 1962 graduate of Variety Village in Toronto. He was proud to be chosen as a spokesperson for the school. Bill worked at a farm implement store in the parts department, until he took over the front counter of Betty’s Variety Store in Guelph from 1965 to 1976. Bill moved to Brackendale, B.C. in 1992 to join his family, where he quickly became a favourite choice for lawn care. He impressed everyone with his work ethic, pride, and perseverance.
In 2004, Bill moved to Powell River, B.C. Bill will be lovingly remembered by his dear friends and staff at Kiwanis Village and at Evergreen Extended Care. Bill was quick with a joke and loved to make the nurses laugh. Cheering on his Toronto sports teams, the Leafs and the Blue Jays gave him so much pleasure.
Bill is reunited with his parents Alfred and Jessie Harper and nephew Brian Burton. Bill is survived by his loving sister, Sara Elizabeth (Betty) Burton. His niece, Brenda Burton (Ed Audet) and great-nieces Kristin Leigh and Courtney Leigh (Jesse Jerry). Uncle Bill will be lovingly remembered by his great-great nieces and nephews, Cameron, Josephine, James, and Harper. Bill will always be remembered by his dear friend Patti Anderson, a friendship Uncle Bill treasured.
Uncle Bill is an inspiration. Having a disability did not change his joy for life. He did not accept handouts, but would give everyone he knew a hand up. He was our sounding board, a giver of wise advice, and our cherished Uncle. We will miss him so much.
The family will be forever grateful for the love, friendship and phenomenal care he received at Evergreen Extended Care and from Dr. Dohm. We could not have asked for a better team.
A memorial will be held for Bill at a safer time. Until then, tell a joke and make someone laugh for Bill.

Betty Brenda Kristin and Courtney. I’m sending you my most sincere condolences to you all on the loss of your brother uncle and great uncle. I have known Uncle Bill since he moved to Squamish after the loss of his parents. First Betty took good care of her brother and then Brenda you took over when Betty could no longer do it. What a lucky guy to have you all as family. I loved to visit him when I made it to Powell River in recent years. Bill was a caring lovely man. I am again so sorry for your loss and sending you all a virtual hug.

I met Bill when he was at Kiwanis Village and got to see his sense of humour as I visited with my parents Tom and Lil Philip. Later he came to ECU as mom and dad had also moved there. Such a pleasure to visit with. I will always remember his big smile and that twinkle in his eye. He loved his family and talked of the blueberries. I would of loved to have known him when he was younger because I am sure there would be some good stories to enjoy. Love and prayers to you Brenda and the family…Love Marlene Crilly

Relation: I knew Betty and Bill from the variety store. My father was Ross Harper and would have been a uncle to Betty and Bill. The last time I saw Betty was at the 50th Harper family reunion.,.
Dear Betty, Brenda and family. I am sorry to hear about the passing of Bill. When Betty had the Variety store my husband and I lived a couple of blocks away and would often walk over to the store and Bill would always welcome us with a friendly smile.

Bill was one of the happiest people I knew. What good fortune that my Mom and Dad, Vern and Josey Marie Dyment, joined Bill’s table at Evergreen Care Home. Bill and Dad had much in common and thoroughly enjoyed conversing about their farming days in Ontario, their gardening businesses later in life., and hockey. Bill welcomed my parents (and George and I when we visited) with joyous humour and a twinkle in his eye.
One of Bill’s special deeds in November 2020 was to light the memorial candle for my Mom.
It was all the harder for Bill who took the loss of his friends very hard. Our family will always be grateful for Bill’s efforts.
My parents’ time at ECU was so enhanced by having Bill as a dear friend.
Bill will live on in our hearts always.
Love, George and Julie
