Winnifred Alice Campbell

February 18, 1920 - August 21, 2013

Tribute

Win passed away in her sleep at Powell River General Hospital at the age of 93. She was predeceased by her parents Robert (Bob) and Alice Southcott, husband E.C. (Ernie) Campbell, brothers R.H. (Bert) Southcott and S.R. (Sid) Southcott, sister Ellen (Nell) Smith and son-in-law Charles Smith.

Win is survived by her daughter Marcy Smith of Henley-on-Thames, England, son Robert (Bob) Campbell (Gina) of Airdrie, Alberta and son John Campbell (Brenda) of Richmond, BC, six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her niece, constant companion and best friend Wendy Mobley (Doug).

Win, the youngest of her family, was born in Vancouver but spent holidays in Powell River, where her father was employed as a construction foreman building houses in the Townsite. In 1927 the family moved to Powell River where Win spent the rest of her life. She attended the old Henderson and Brooks schools and on leaving worked at Powell Stores until she married Ernie in 1941. Win didn’t move too far from her father’s house on Maple Avenue and lived on the same block until April 2012, when she moved into the Kiwanis Garden Manor.

As a young woman, Win was very active with the Women’s Auxiliary and choir of St. Paul’s Anglican Church and enjoyed summers with Ernie and her children at the family’s cabin at Palm Beach. She was a great cook and baked what was probably the best apple pie on the planet. Win loved to read and turned this love into a new career in 1966 when she began working at Books and Stationery, eventually becoming the book buyer for the store and working there until she was in her seventies. In her retirement, Win volunteered at the Red Cross room for the Powell River Health-Care Auxiliary.

There will be no service by request.
