Alexander Lawson Sandy Dickie

October 24, 1913 - October 14, 2010

Tribute

Alexander L. (Sandy) Dickie, October 24, 1913 – October 6, 2010:
Sandy leaves us after a life of hard work and love for his family. Born in Nova Scotia in 1913 he experienced the depression, prohibition, and other world-changing events. Moving to Port McNeill during the Second World War era he was a trained West Coast Ranger and was partner in Dickie Logging operating on the east coast of Vancouver Island. During his career in logging he met Ernie Mahood of Mahood Logging and moved his family to Powell River in 1953. He soon became Woods Foreman for Mahood Logging running the operations side of the business. He finished his regular working life on the boom at the “Mill” in Powell River and retired at 65 years old. He continued his love for the woods salal picking and picking mushrooms. He also ran a busy booth at the Open Air Market selling self grown vegetables and berries up until age 94. He had the reputation for the best peas in town selling out minutes after the market opened.
He leaves to be with wife Nellie, sons Berry and Elton and daughters Heather and Sandra. Surviving children are the twins, Gregory and Glenn as well as many grandchildren. He also leaves special friends Patsy, Richie, Sverre, Jane, Tom, Linda, Dr. Toole and others who helped to keep his independence at
his home until age 95. The staff at Olive Devaud Residence are to be acknowledged for the wonderful love and care given Sandy in his last year on earth.
He made an impression on many and was a true “character,” an old-timer with lots of life stories and lessons he shared with all.
Service will be held on Saturday, October 23 at 2 pm at the Westview Baptist Church, 3676 Joyce Ave in Powell River. No donations please. Arrangements entrusted to Stubberfield Funeral Home Ltd, Condolences may be directed to the family by visiting www.stubberfieldfh.com.
