Alfred John Carsten

April 14, 1935 - December 16, 2014

Tribute

Alfred was born in Massachusetts and passed away in Powell River, BC. He was also known as Big Al, The Bear and Genial Al. He died of a major brain hemorrhage leaving his family to always remember the joy of his love and of being close to him and a part of his life. He is survived by his wife of almost 58 years, Arlene, and his son Jonathan G. (Mitz) Carsten who continue to live at Okeover, his son Christopher Carsten who lives in France, his sister Phyllis (Richard) Meier and many nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his fraternity brothers from Lambda Chi Alpha and the multitude of friends from all over the world.

Al attended Alfred University in upstate New York and graduated with a bachelor of science in ceramic engineering. During his lifetime he created and grew several companies. The last built conveyor ovens, casting machines and other major equipment for the semi-conductor industry giving employment to many families. In 1992 Al and Arlene moved the company from San Diego, CA to Powell River, BC.

Al enjoyed jazz, cooking and entertaining as well as birdwatching, the Blue Jays and women’s basketball. Al always had a warm smile and a happy disposition.

There will be no service at his request but the family asks you to send your memories of Al to be put into a book for Arlene Carsten at 10032 Leslie Road, Powell River, BC, Canada V8A 0G3 or emailed to carsten1@xplornet.com or faxed to 1.604.483.9650.

May the happy memories you have of him continue to infuse your lives with the joy he so freely shared.

Relation: Jazz events hosted by them

The West Coast Jazz and Blues Society had several fund raising events hosted by the Carstens. It was always the very best food and great musical groups in attendance. Al loved his jazz, and he was most cordial in his manner and in his enjoyment of the music and the social back and forth at his marvelous home. Thank you Al and Arlene for hosting so many of these invitational events–and thank you for all of your support in helping us succeed. We are forever indebted to you and your family. May God Bless all of you. Rest well, Al and look for some great jazz on the other side. Travis McDonough, Sechelt, B. C. (formerly 35 years in Powell River working with the great Peter Taylor.
