Harley deBruyckere It is with profound sadness, but with full hearts, the family of Harley deBruyckere announce his passing on April 21 after a long journey and battle with cancer. Harley passed in the arms of his caring and loving wife and partner of 34 years. He is survived by son Kevin (Shannon), grandson Jared; daughter Karen, granddaughters Karley and Kelsey, Wendy (Doug) Soley, grandsons Kevin (Kendra), great-granddaughter Layla, Brett; Brian (Elizabeth) Urlacher, Rick (Corinne) Urlacher, grandchildren Shane and Mikaela; Laurie (Larry) Berge, grandsons Joshua and Garrett. Harley is also survived by many special cousins, family and friends. He was predeceased by his grandson Justin and his parents Medard and Marion Bruyckere Harley was born September 27, 1940, in Calgary, Alberta, and moved at a young age to Innisfail, AB. He received his education in Red Deer, Lacombe and St. Joseph’s in Edmonton. Harley joined the RCMP in Prince George on November 18, 1960, retiring as a staff sergeant on November 18, 1985, in Red Deer, AB. In his 25 years he served in Cloverdale, Port Coquitlam, Prince Rupert and Terrace, followed by postings in Edmonton, Cold Lake and Red Deer. In 1985, Harley joined Helen in her financial services practice at Investors Group for another 17 years of hard work and success. Harley and Helen travelled to many different countries together and Harley was at his best and loved every moment of seeing great places, immersing in different cultures and expanding his knowledge of this beautiful world we live in. Upon retirement in 2001, Harley and Helen moved to Powell River, where Harley soon became involved in the community and doing what Harley loved to do, socializing, helping, making new friends, joining groups and organizations that could fulfill the motto he lived by: Making a difference! He loved skiing on Mount Washington and getting in his boat to spend the day on the water. He was at peace on the water and it was a sad day when his illness took his boat trips away. Harley will be remembered in Powell River at 2 pm on Saturday, May 5, at St. David and St. Paul Anglican Church, 6310 Sycamore Street, and in Red Deer, AB, in the summer. The family wishes to express its sincere and deepest gratitude to Dr. Pieter Rossouw and the incredible doctors and staff at Powell River General Hospital, and the dedicated and compassionate staff of the Palliative Home Care Team. In lieu of flowers, donations to Powell River Hospice Society would be greatly appreciated.
