Janet McClymont Hutton

September 22, 1931 - April 21, 2023

Tribute

It is with great sadness that the family of Janet “Jenny” McClymont Hutton, announces her passing on April 21, 2023. She was predeceased by her husband og 67 years Robert Hutton and son-in-law Rick. She was Mum to Bobby (Fiona), George (Karen) and Margaret; Gran to Kieran, Shira (Kevin), Ailisan (Ross) and Grace; and Great-Gran to Lennox and Evan. Her family was absolutely her greatest joy.

Jenny was born in Renfrew, Scotland, on September 22, 1931; it was a difficult birth and she was not expected to survive. Her stubborn streak was already in place and she proved the doctor wrong and went on to have an adventurous life. She wore pants before it was “acceptable” and her reason was because you couldn’t ride a motorcycle in a skirt.

She and our father were married on June 12, 1953, by the same minister who christened her. She and Dad decided to immigrate to Canada in 1962 and although they briefly moved to Connecticut in 1964, Mum’s heart wanted to return “home” to Powell River, and they finally settled here for good in 1966.

Growing up, there was never any doubt who was in charge of our household. She was commander in chief, as well as a master soup maker, knitter of sweaters and dolls, highland dance outfit seamstress and encourager of dreams. She enjoyed jigsaw and crossword puzzles, Chinese food, Quality Street chocolates, shortbread and her weekly trip to her hairdresser Anne.

She was resilient and strong, generous and kind, didn’t suffer any fools and you had to have two broken legs to stay home sick from school. She was quick-witted, cheeky and enjoyed a good laugh. Most of all she loved her family and loved to talk about them to anyone who would listen. She was the keeper of our family’s history and was the last of her generation.

Jenny appreciated all the compassionate care she received from her home support workers, the adult day program staff, and all the staff at Willingdon Creek Village, especially her house 3 and 4 “girls”.

The family wishes to thank everyone for all the wonderful care and kindness; we are truly grateful.

Mum, you lifted us up when we were weary, cried with us in our sorrows, laughed with us in joy, taught us to be strong, to embrace life, but most of all you surrounded us with your love. We will never walk alone, you will always be with us.

Rest easy, Mum…
