Jean Scales Lamont

February 15, 1935 - June 3, 2016

Tribute

Jean passed away peacefully on Friday, June 3. She was one of five children born to Diana and Jack Henderson in Kilmarnock, Scotland.
Jean was predeceased by her loving husband Jim and son Gordon, parents Diana and Jack, as well as brother's Frank and Jim and sister Helen. Jean is survived by her son Derek (Loreen), daughter Diana (Jen), grandchildren Adyn, Megan, Kate (Rob), Cory, Marissa and Samantha and great-grandchildren Jordyn, Justin, Emma and Summer.
Jean grew up in Scotland working in the family business in Shortlees, attended a year of nursing college and won the Princess of Kilmarnock beauty pageant before embarking on a travel adventure to Canada. Her life changed forever in Powell River when she met the love of her life, Jimmy Lamont, who filled her life with love, laughter and kindness. They became engaged within a month and married a year later in Scotland before returning to Canada to raise their three children.
Jean's life was devoted entirely to her family. She never missed any events Gordon, Derek and Diana were involved in. Many weekends were spent standing in stormy weather on the soccer sidelines, cheering on her children and volunteering time to causes that enriched her kids' lives. Her loving heart and gentle hand surrounded her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews from the moment they were born. Jean’s growing family was always her pride and joy, even from afar she proudly spoke of and showed pictures of her beautiful family.
Jean worked at Beach Gardens Resort and volunteered for many years with St. Andrews Ladies Club and Villa Soccer Club. Many babies in Powell River were in receipt of her beautiful knitted sweaters, given in the baby layettes from the Scotch Club to families in need.
Jean was the friend that you could rely on. To all those friends in need, Jean would drive to medical appointments, help with grocery shopping and weekly outings for lunch and around town just to brighten someone's day; a kindness that was also shown to her in the last few years by some lovely ladies.
Jean did not help people for the thanks, but simply because she was a kind, compassionate woman who put the needs of others before herself. Even in her last months, she was full of smiles, jokes, kind words and laughter for her loved ones and all those around. Her memories may have been fading, but her gracious and loving spirit shone bright.
A service will be held at Powell River United Church on Tuesday, June 14, at 2 pm; a tea will follow.
In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to Alzheimer Society of Canada.
