Tribute

March 3, 1923 – February 8, 2018 It is with great sadness the family of Robert James Durling announce his passing. Bob was born in Glasgow, Scotland. At age 18, during World War II, Bob joined the Merchant Marine sailing in convoys on the North Atlantic. He rarely shared his wartime experiences, which included being torpedoed twice. Following the war, Bob continued with the Donaldson Line, sailing to North and South America. He received his Deep Sea Master Mariner certificate and came to Canada, recruited by the Canadian Hydrographic Service. He sailed on the William J. Stewart conducting surveys of the BC coast. After years at sea, Bob came ashore and articled with Vancouver land survey firm Underhill and Underhill. Bob married Jackie Snow in 1958. In 1967, he opened a survey practice in Powell River and the family moved to Douglas Bay. Upon retirement, Bob became the “Clock Doctor,” repairing mechanical timepieces, a lifetime interest. Bob dearly loved his family and is survived by his wife of 59 years Jackie, daughter Janet (Frank), son Ian (Carol) and grandchildren Scott, Sky and Ryan. The family wishes to thank Doctor DuToit, his office staff and the respectfully caring staff at Evergreen Care Unit.
