Ruth Ellen Milne

February 7, 1925 - April 27, 2011

Tribute

We are sorry to let you know that our mother, grandmother and great-grandmother has left us peacefully, after achieving a lifetime of 86 years. She lived a simple life. Before she fell and broke her hip on April 1, she walked without a cane or walker, beat her daughter and son regularly at crib, and was happily living at Olive Devaud Residence.
The Milne and Carlson families

Ruth was born in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, the youngest of nine children, three boys and six girls. The last one born, the last to die. She came to Powell River in 1946 to help her sister care for her two young children. She always said moving here was the best thing she ever did. Ruth met her husband Bill at a dance hall that is now an apartment building near the foot of Duncan Street. Within months they were engaged and married in May 1947. Bill had returned from serving overseas in World War II and wanted to start a family right away. Their first child arrived just 11 months later. Ruth was famous for her Grannyisms that will live on in her family members. She loved to play bingo and, when she no longer went to bingo halls, she would spend time playing the game on scratch cards. Her parents taught all their children to play cards and for years Ruth played whist, bridge and crib. Most recently she loved nothing more than to play crib with her daughter and son, still beating them at the game just weeks ago.
Ruth was pre-deceased by her husband Bill in 1980. Missing Granny are her daughter Joyce (Don) Carlson, sons Cliff (Jenny) and Ken Milne; grandchildren Brent (Ikuyo) Carlson, Shane (Kris) Carlson, Kelley (Jeff) Barszczewski, Cheryl (Joey) Laroche; and great-grandchildren Leon, Mackenzie, Ty, Lucas and Quinn.
Thanks to those at Powell River General Hospital for their care and concern during her stay there. Also to all the caring staff at Olive Devaud Residence where Ruth lived for the past year. Before she fell and broke her hip on April 1, she walked without a cane or walker. After 25 days in hospital, she came home to die in her new “apartment.”
There will be a family gathering later this year. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Olive Devaud Residents Fund.
Every day Ruth repeated this prayer, asking for a blessing on all her family and friends at the end.

Now I lay me down to sleep,

I pray the Lord my soul to keep.

If I should die before I wake,

I pray the Lord my soul to take.

Ruth always said when the Good Lord was ready, He would take her and He did.

Dear Joyce,

We remain extremely sad to learn about your Mom’s passing. On Apr. 25, 26th ?? as we entered the 4th Floor at the P.R. Gen. Hospital, we heard some loud beautiful singing. We listened closer while I turned to my husband and said “That’s Ruth”, he laughed and was surprised that I had recognized her voice. Minutes later we went in to visit her. She accepted us with a big, beautiful smile, recognized us and recalled our past visits with her while she would wait for you in the Barnet apartment lobby. We had a lovely visit and like always, she was graceful and cheerful. Before we left, she thanked us for the visit in a style as if she had received a visit from the Queen.
To you and your family, We are so sorry for your loss and please accept our warmest condolences.
